04.08.06 WORLDBEAT NIGHT

Report

The first highlight of friday’s Worldbeat Night was shortly after midnight, when a real classic sounded off the Reggae Sunsplash PA.
Following the title of the night the audience was warmed up by artists from Brasil, Columbia, Italy, Cuba and Ghana, as the people got to hear the original „Murder she wrote“ by Chaka Demus and Pliers at 0:30am.
Having less artists than in the night before, Junior Kelly was lucky to perform for full 40 minutes after that.
Besides hits like “Blaze”, “Smile”, “Rasta should be deeper” and the final “Receive” he explained his rare speeches.
“Me nuh fi say certain tings only because me get paid money fi it.” recieved a big round of applause.
After another 40 minutes of band change it was 2:05am and time for some Soca rythm.
Coming in straight from Trinidad Machel Montano was in top form shaking, dancing and filling the audience with enthusiasm.
Rags filled the sky, while bmobile promotion teams took care of the last people without anything to wave.
Besides his own hits Machel also performed a Remix of Akon’s „Soul Survivor“ and Bob Marley’s „Lively up yourself“.
And he still carried some company: Mr Vegas, who already performed the night before, entered the stage once again to sing a combination and the Japanese Dancehall Queen Junko took the chance to climb up on the stage frame while dancing the dutty wine hanging upside down.
The following band change was kept pleasant and short by a show in the amphitheatre.
Anthony Cruz convinced vocally with popular songs like „Half Way Tree“ but couldn’t let go complaining about the missing vibe on the small stage.
Proofing him wrong Lexxus aka Mr Lex came on next and created a great vibe with Dancehall tunes like „Video Light“.
Speeches like “To keep a good relationship – don’t take this personal – sometimes you have to just shut up.” or “The worst two words woman always say are ‘anyway’ and ‘whatever’” earned loud laughs and aproval especially by the male fans.
After the 4 member group LOST another classic entered the stage at 4:05am.
The great Everton Blender presented 20 mintues full of good music like „Family Man“ or „Ghetto People Song“ before the show returned to the big stage again.
As Luciano could not manage to perform on Worldbeat Night and got replaced on the coming night, the host, barefoot philosopher and Irie FM-DJ Mutabaruka announced the second last act for Friday.
All dressed in brown jackets, Morgan Heritage carried three keyboards and of course their Rasta altar to perform a whole hour of big sound.
“How come” followed by “Inna dem ting deh”, “She’s still loving me” after “Best Friend”.
Antoher family member of LMS entered the stage for the „Mount Zion Medley“ on the popular „Liberation“ riddim to support his uncles and auntie singing and rapping.
At dawn it was finally Alpha Bondy’s turn, who came all the way from Ivory Coast to Jamaica, to close another great night of Reggae Sunsplash... but: after the show is before the show again anyway.
