Eine Teilnahme am Red Bull Concert in Australien ist ebenso geplant, wie Sly und Robbies eigene Show für 2007. „Sly & Robbie & Friends“ soll im kommenden Jahr die Größen der jamaikanischen Reggae- und Dancehall-Szene am berühmten James Bond Beach in Oracabessa vereinen. Wer dabei sein möchte, kann sich für Juli 2007 schon mal Urlaub nehmen. Natürlich werden Studioproduktionen weiterhin nicht vernachlässigt werden. „Wir sind ständig auf der Suche nach neuen, jungen Talenten.“ Diese werden zukünftig allerdings nicht nur unter Taxi veröffentlicht, auch Rorey hat mit seinem eigenen Label „The Baker“, das ebenfalls im „One Pop Studio“ produziert, Großes vor. Die „Bäckerei“ des Chef-Toningineurs wird sich vor allem auf Dancehall spezialisieren und hat bereits Songs wie „Brown girl in the ring“, eine Kombination von Beenie Man und Danielle, oder „So sexy“ von Anthony B. featuring Charine vorzuweisen. Warten wir also gespannt ab, was sich zukünftig so in unseren Gehörgängen wieder finden wird... Solange das Taxi rollt, werden noch genug Brötchen gebacken werden. (ursl)   DEMstory Present Auch heute ist das Taxi noch nicht voll und es gibt täglich viel zu tun. „Im Moment höre ich Demo-Tapes von 2003.“ lacht Rorey, als wir bei einem Videodreh im Kingstoner Hilton Hotel nebeneinander sitzen. „Daneben produzieren wir ständig in unserem Studio.“ Die Produzierten, das sind sowohl unter Vertrag genommene in-house Artists, wie Cherine Anderson, Mitch oder Danielle als auch jeder andere Musiker, der das sogenannte „One Pop Studio“ buchen möchte. Vor allem internationale Künstler wie No Doubt, Matisyahu oder Sinead O’Connor nutzten in den letzten Jahren die Erfahrung von Sly und Robbie, die allerdings in den meisten Fällen nur noch in beratender Funktion tätig sind; die Regler schieben Rorey und Collin. Ihnen sind sowohl drei in 2006 bereits erschienene Alben, als auch weitere drei Platten, die im September veröffentlich werden sollen, zu verdanken: „Dancehall Dutty“, eine Zusammenarbeit von Taxi Records und Roreys eigenem Label „The Baker“, featured Artists wie Elephant Man, TOK und Anthony B. Frauenpower in Form von alten und neuen Songs von Lady Saw oder Pam Hall ist auf „Women in Taxi“ vereinigt. Die dritte Produktion trägt den Titel „Rhythm Doubles“ und präsentiert ausschließlich neues Material. Für das von Sly und Robbie selbst produzierte Album haben sich keine Geringeren als UB40, Wyclef Jean, Luciano und ein weiteres Mal Elephant Man und Lady Saw zusammen getan. In Deutschland wird „Rhythm Doubles“ unter Distribution von Rootdown Records Mitte September zu kaufen sein. Und als wäre als das nicht Arbeit genug, gibt es schon wieder Pläne für den Nachfolger von „Dancehall Dutty“. „JIN (Jamaica Innovative Noise)“ soll im Dezember erscheinen und kombiniert Dancehall mit mexikanischen oder italienischen Klängen oder R’n’B. Junior Kelly, Beenie Man und Richie Spice sind nur einige der Appetit anregenden Namen, sowie der bereits auf Irie FM rauf und runter gespielte „El Cumbanchero“ Riddim. „Momentan mischen und editieren wir gerade die Aufnahmen.“ erklärt Rorey stolz. Ihre musikalische Offenheit spiegelt sich bei Taxi nicht nur in den vielfältigen Produktionen, sondern auch in der Auswahl ihrer gesignten Artists wider. Auf die Frage, welche Kriterien eine Rolle bei der Auswahl von Künstlern spielen, antwortet Rorey: „Es geht uns nicht um eine bestimmte Musikrichtung. Ich höre mir die Demos an und es geht einfach um Zeug, das sich gut anhört. Selbst wenn nur ein guter Song dabei ist, lohnt es sich, den zu produzieren.“ (ursl)   DEMstory Past Die Zeit 3 Jahrzehnte zurück gedreht, wir befinden uns in den 70ern. Es sind die beiden Anfang 20–jährigen Robbie Shakespeare (Bassist) und „Sly“ Dunbar (Schlagzeuger), die von Studio zu Studio und Show zu Show hetzen, um sich ihren Lebensunterhalt zu verdienen. Das Geld ist nicht viel, die Motivation dennoch groß genug, immer ein wenig beiseite zu legen und auf Tour mit Peter Tosh im wahrsten Sinne des Wortes von Water Crackern und Wasser zu leben, um sich einen Traum zu erfüllen: ein eigenes Label. 1974 ist es soweit, die Gründung offiziell, den Namen, der den ersten „Channel One“ ablöst, liefert ein Freund. „Das war Shorty“, erzählt Sly noch heute mit einem Lächeln. „Er hat mich damals mit seinem Taxi zu den Auftritten und Studios gefahren. Ich hatte ja kein Geld für ein Auto.“ Das gelb-schwarze Gefährt existiert auch 30 Jahre später noch, doch macht Shorty seine Touren inzwischen mit einem anderen Wagen. Vier Jahre ziehen ins Land of Wood and Water bis die erste Veröffentlichung das Haus Taxi Records verlässt. Von Anfang an ist Earnest an der Seite der heute legendären Riddim Twins als Engineer. Kurze Zeit später stoßen die Tontechniker Junior Murvin und Steven Stanley, der sich vor allem als Produzent von Black Uhuru einen Namen gemacht hatte, dazu. Mit den Jahren und wachsendem Erfolg wird der Bedarf an Mitarbeitern größer. Das Mischen, sowohl im Live- als auch im Studiobereich übernimmt Collin Bullbayork Anfang der 90er. Seit 1995 ist Orville „Rorey“ Baker der main in-house engineer, unterstützt von Linford „Fatta“ Marshall. Um Promotion, Geschäftliches und Videoproduktionen kümmert sich Kaz. Der Japaner lernt 1982 als Diplomat Mick Jagger in Kanada kennen und entdeckt seine Liebe zur Musik. Zwei Jahre später stößt er zu Sly und Robbie und beginnt viel Geld und Energie in Equipment und Arbeit zu stecken, was angesichts seines eigentlichen Jobs nicht immer einfach ist. Asking for the criterions of choosing musicians, Rorey answers: „It’s not about a special type of music. I listen to the demos and it’s all about good stuff. Even if it’s only one good tune, it’s worth to produce it.“ DEMstory Past (eng) Turning back time 3 decades, it’s the 70s. It is not much money, but still enough motivation to save a little bit while on tour with Peter Tosh literally living of water crackers and water, to fulfill a dream: their very own record label. 1974 is the year, the foundation is official, the name replacing the first one „Channel One“ is created by a friend. „That was Shorty“, Sly still tells with a smile. „He always drove me with his taxi to the shows and studios. I didn’t have no own car.“ The yellow-black vehicle still exists 30 years later, although Shorty drives another taxi today. It takes 4 years in the land of wood and water until the first record is released by Taxi. From the very beginning Earnest works by the side of todays legendary Riddim Twins as an audio engineer. Shortly after that the engineers Junior Murvin and Steven Stanley, former famous producer of the great Black Uhuru, join. The years go by as the succes grows and the need for employees increases. The mixing, live as well as in the studio is Collin Bullbayork’s work since the early 1990s. Since 1995 Orville „Rorey“ Baker is the main in-house engineer, getting support from Linford „Fatta“ Marshall. Kaz is in charge of the promotion, business and video productions. The Japanese meets Mick Jagger in 1982 in Canada, while working as a diplomat, and starts to love the music. Two years later he gets in touch with Sly and Robbie beginning to invest a lot of money and energy in equipment and work, what is not always easy in view of his job.
